Are Chinese Companies Leading the Way in Autonomous Vehicles?

By John R. Quain

Anyone who has traveled to Europe will note the startling inroads Chinese EV makers have made in a slew of countries. And it's been well known for years that the same firms, such as Baidu, are investing heavily in autonomous vehicle technology. A recent article in The New York Times underscores the issue, noting that thousands of test vehicles are or soon will be on the challenging streets of some of China's biggest cities. They will no doubt knock out technology laggards like Tesla (which still hasn't adopted the hardware necessary for AVs), but Waymo still looks to be very much in the game. Now if GM's recent $850 million injection of capital into Cruise would just get that company back on track, we might have something.
